The Battle of Pino de Baire, fought in the opening weeks of the Ten Years' War, marked the first recorded use of the machete charge by mambí forces. This tactic — which would become a defining feature of Cuban insurgent warfare throughout the conflict — was introduced here under the command of Donato Mármol and Máximo Gómez against Spanish forces led by Demetrio Quirós Weyler. The engagement established a tactical template that mambí units would repeat across subsequent campaigns, demonstrating that irregular Cuban forces could press close-quarters offensive action against a conventionally armed opponent. With 1,100 mambí fighters engaged and 200 Cuban casualties recorded, the battle was costly, but its doctrinal legacy outlasted its immediate operational result.
