Battle of Pindus

Overview

The Battle of Pindus took place in the Pindus Mountains in Epirus and West Macedonia, Greece, from 28 October – 13 November 1940. The battle was fought between the Greek and the Italian armies during the first stages of the Greco-Italian War. The elite Italian 3rd Alpine Division "Julia" invaded Greece from the Pindus sector. After its initial advance, the division was surrounded by the Greek army and forced to retreat after suffering heavy losses. In the aftermath, the Greeks were able to push back the Italians, advancing deep into Albanian territory.

Significance

The Battle of Pindus was fought in the opening weeks of the Greco-Italian War, when Italy's elite 3rd Alpine Division 'Julia' invaded Greece through the Pindus Mountains sector of Epirus and West Macedonia. Despite the division's elite status and a significant numerical advantage — roughly 10,804 Italian troops against approximately 2,000 Greek defenders — the Italian force was encircled by Greek units and compelled to withdraw after sustaining an estimated 5,000 casualties. The defeat of the Julia Division in this sector disrupted Italy's initial operational plan and removed a substantial Alpine force from the front within the first two weeks of the war. The Greek success at Pindus contributed directly to the broader counteroffensive that followed: rather than being pushed back, Greek forces used the momentum from this engagement to advance deep into Albanian territory, reversing the direction of the war entirely. The battle established early that Italian expectations of a swift occupation of Greece were unfounded, setting the conditions for a prolonged and ultimately unsuccessful Italian campaign.
