Battle of Philippeville

Significance

The August Offensive of 1955 marked a decisive turning point in the Algerian War. FLN insurgents and armed mobs launched coordinated raids across cities and towns of the Constantine region, targeting European settler communities in attacks that took the form of ethnic riots and resulted in the massacre of several dozen pieds-Noirs. The French army and pied-noir vigilantes responded with reprisals that killed several thousand Muslim Algerians, with FLN casualties recorded at approximately 3,000. The mutual massacres hardened communal divisions across the Constantinois region and fundamentally altered the character of the conflict. The scale of violence on both sides foreclosed moderate positions and accelerated polarization between the European settler population and the Muslim Algerian population, deepening the war's entrenchment at a moment when it might otherwise have remained containable. The events are regarded as a watershed that transformed a nascent insurgency into a mass communal conflict with little prospect of negotiated resolution.
