Battle context

The Battle of Peschiera was a minor engagement on 6 August 1796 between Austrian forces under General Anton Lipthay and the French division of General André Masséna during the Italian Campaign of 1796–1797. French casualties of 131 are the only quantified outcome recorded. The engagement took place within the broader contest for northern Italy in which French forces under Napoleon were systematically reducing Austrian resistance, but the limited scale of this clash gave it no decisive role in determining the campaign's trajectory.
