Battle context

The Battle of Pavón, fought in Santa Fé Province on 17 September 1861, proved decisive in the Argentine Civil Wars. Commanding forces of 15,000–16,000 against a Confederation army of 16,000–18,000, Bartolomé Mitre secured the field when Justo José de Urquiza withdrew his forces, leaving Buenos Aires in control of the outcome. The Confederation sustained casualties of 1,200–1,300, a loss that undermined its ability to contest Buenos Aires's dominance. The battle effectively shifted the balance of power in the prolonged civil conflict toward Buenos Aires, setting the conditions for Mitre and the Buenos Aires faction to assert authority over the broader Argentine political order.
