Battle context
The Battle of Obilești was fought in Wallachia as part of the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812, a conflict running concurrently with the broader Napoleonic Wars. Russian forces under Miloradovich, Olanus, and Bakhmetev, numbering between 7,000 and 10,000 men, engaged an Ottoman force of 12,000–13,000 under Çarhacı Ali Pasha. Ottoman casualties of approximately 3,000 against Russian losses of around 1,000 indicate a significant Russian tactical advantage despite being outnumbered. The engagement was part of Russia's sustained effort to assert control over the Danubian Principalities, with Wallachia serving as a principal theater of operations throughout the war.
