Significance
The Battle of Nyborg, fought on 14 November 1659 on the Danish island of Funen, was the final major engagement of the Dano-Swedish War of 1658–1660, itself a theater of the broader Second Northern War. A Swedish force of 5,000–7,000 under Philip Florinus of Sulzbach and Gustaf Otto Stenbock faced a combined allied army of 9,000–11,200 assembled from Denmark-Norway, the Dutch Republic, Brandenburg-Prussia, and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, with commanders including Hans Schack, Ernst Albrecht von Eberstein, Stefan Czarniecki, and the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Swedish casualties of approximately 2,000 against allied losses of around 1,900 reflected the scale of the contest. The multinational composition of the allied force underscored the degree to which Sweden's expansionist position in the Baltic had drawn a coalition of regional powers into direct opposition. As the concluding major battle of the Dano-Swedish War, Nyborg effectively ended Swedish military operations on Funen and set the conditions for the diplomatic settlement that would follow, marking the limit of Swedish ambitions in this phase of the Second Northern War.
