Significance
The Battle of Notium was a Spartan naval victory during the Peloponnesian War that carried consequences disproportionate to its tactical scale. Although the engagement was described as small, its political and strategic effects were substantial. The defeat, attributable to Antiochus acting against his orders from Alcibiades, led directly to the downfall of Alcibiades as an Athenian commander — removing one of Athens's most capable and experienced naval leaders from command at a critical stage of the war. Simultaneously, the victory established Lysander's reputation as a Spartan commander capable of defeating the Athenians at sea, a perception that would carry weight in subsequent operations. The battle thus weakened Athenian leadership while elevating a Spartan commander who would go on to play a defining role in the final years of the conflict.
Tactics
Antiochus, left in command of the Athenian fleet blockading the Spartan fleet at Ephesus, attempted to draw the Spartans into battle by approaching with a small decoy force. The Spartans under Lysander recognized or exploited the maneuver, and the stratagem backfired, resulting in a Spartan victory over the Athenian fleet.
