Significance

The Battle of Noryang was the final major naval engagement of the Japanese invasions of Korea, closing a conflict that had begun in 1592. Japanese casualties reached 13,000, a figure that reflects the scale of the allied naval action at the battle's conclusion. The engagement brought the six-year conflict to its operational end, with a constellation of senior Japanese commanders — including Konishi Yukinaga, Shimazu Yoshihiro, Tachibana Muneshige, and Wakizaka Yasuharu — facing an allied force led by Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin alongside Ming commanders Chen Lin and Deng Zilong. As the last battle of the invasions, Noryang marked the definitive close of Japan's attempt to subjugate Korea and advance into China, ending the most destructive foreign military intervention on the Korean peninsula prior to the modern era.
