Battle of Northampton

Significance

The Battle of Northampton, fought on 10 July 1460, was an engagement in the Wars of the Roses between Yorkist forces under the Earl of Warwick, the Earl of March, and Baron Fauconberg and a Lancastrian army of 5,000 commanded under the nominal presence of Henry VI, with senior Lancastrian lords including the Duke of Buckingham, the Earl of Shrewsbury, Viscount Beaumont, Baron Egremont, and Baron Grey. The concentration of senior Lancastrian commanders on the field indicates the strategic weight both sides attached to the engagement during this phase of the conflict.
