The Battle of Nooitgedacht saw Boer commandos under Generals Koos de la Rey and Christiaan Beyers inflict a defeat on a British brigade commanded by Major General R. A. P. Clements. With British forces numbering around 1,500 and Boer strength at roughly 2,100, the engagement resulted in significant British casualties. The outcome demonstrated that Boer forces retained the capacity to coordinate combined operations and strike effectively against British formations well into the guerrilla phase of the Second Boer War, which by December 1900 had replaced the conventional campaigning of the war's opening stages.
