Battle of Noirmoutier

Overview

The Battle of Noirmoutier was a confrontation in the War in the Vendée which took place on 3 January 1794 between the Republicans and the Vendeans for control of the island of Noirmoutier. Situated in the Bay of Bourgneuf and linked to the mainland by the Gois causeway, the island was occupied on 12 October 1793 by General Charette's Vendean troops. This capture immediately alarmed the Committee of Public Safety, which feared Britain intervening on behalf of the royalists. However, Charette did not attempt to send a schooner to Britain until December to make contact with the British government, and he received no reply for several months.

Significance

The Battle of Noirmoutier was fought for control of an island the Vendeans had seized from the Republicans in October 1793. Noirmoutier's strategic importance stemmed from its position in the Bay of Bourgneuf and its link to the mainland via the Gois causeway: its capture by General Charette's forces immediately alarmed the Committee of Public Safety, which feared the island could serve as a landing point for British intervention on behalf of the royalist insurgency. The Republican force of 3,000 faced a Vendean garrison of 1,500, and Vendean casualties equaled their entire recorded strength, indicating the near-total destruction of the defending force. Among the Vendean commanders present was Maurice d'Elbée, one of the principal leaders of the uprising. Although Charette had attempted to open communication with the British government by schooner in December 1793, no reply had yet arrived, leaving the island without the external support the Committee had feared. The Republican recapture of Noirmoutier thus eliminated a potential royalist foothold and closed off the most immediate threat of Anglo-Vendean coordination in the Bay of Bourgneuf.
