Battle of Nineveh

Significance

The Battle of Nineveh, fought on 15 December 627, was a confrontation between Byzantine forces under Heraclius and a Sasanian force under Rahzadh. The Sasanian army of roughly 12,000 suffered casualties matching the entirety of their reported strength, indicating the engagement was effectively a destruction of the opposing force. The battle occurred within the Byzantine–Sassanid War of 602–628, a conflict that had consumed both empires for over two decades. The elimination of the Sasanian force at Nineveh removed a principal field army from the theater and placed Heraclius in a position of strategic dominance deep in Sasanian territory during the war's final phase.
