The Battle of Nieuwpoort was fought on 2 July 1600 during the Eighty Years' War and the concurrent Anglo-Spanish War, pitting a Dutch force under Maurice of Nassau and Francis Vere against a Spanish army commanded by Archduke Albert von Austria. With both sides fielding approximately 10,000 men, the engagement ended with the Spanish suffering roughly 4,000 casualties against Dutch losses of between 1,700 and 2,700 — a disparity that indicates a clear Dutch tactical success. The Spanish force was scattered and abandoned its guns on the field, a significant material loss. The battle demonstrated that Dutch arms, which had long operated primarily through siege warfare and defensive action, could confront and defeat Spanish forces in open engagement during the Eighty Years' War.
