Battle context

The Battle of New Market was part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in Virginia. A Confederate force of approximately 4,100 men defeated the larger Union Army of the Shenandoah, which numbered over 6,000 troops under Major General Franz Sigel. The outcome delayed the Union capture of Staunton by several weeks, disrupting Federal operational planning in the Shenandoah Valley. By repelling a numerically superior force, the Confederate army preserved control of a strategically important region, forestalling Union exploitation of the valley corridor at a critical juncture of the 1864 campaign season.
