The Battle of Neuwied ended on the same day that Napoleon Bonaparte signed the Preliminaries of Leoben with Austria, rendering the engagement strategically moot the moment it concluded. Lazare Hoche's Army of Sambre-et-Meuse inflicted a disproportionate defeat on Franz von Werneck's force—Austrian losses totaled at least 4,000 killed, wounded, and captured, along with 24 artillery pieces, 60 vehicles, and five colors, against French casualties of 2,000. Despite the scale of the Austrian reverse, the armistice negotiated alongside the Leoben preliminaries halted all fighting immediately, making the losses on both sides tactically and operationally irrelevant. The battle stands as a late action of the War of the First Coalition, overtaken by diplomacy before its consequences could register on the campaign.
