Battle context

The Battle of Nahrawan was a decisive internal confrontation within the First Fitna, pitting the fourth Rashidun caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib against the Kharijites — former allies who had broken with him after the Battle of Siffin. The Kharijites had separated from Ali's coalition when he agreed to resolve his dispute with Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan through arbitration, a process they condemned as contrary to the Quran. Their subsequent rebellious and violent activities forced Ali to move against them militarily near the Nahrawan Canal, close to modern-day Baghdad. Of the approximately 4,000 assembled rebels, around 1,200 were recovered through offers of amnesty before the engagement began; the remaining force of some 2,800 was largely destroyed, with Kharijite casualties reaching as high as 2,400 by some accounts. Despite the scale of the victory, Nahrawan did not eliminate the Kharijite movement — it entrenched a lasting enmity toward Ali among surviving members and their sympathizers. The battle thus deepened the fractures within the Islamic community during the First Fitna rather than resolving them, drawing Ali into a prolonged internal conflict at a time when his contest with Mu'awiya remained unresolved.
