Battle context
The Battle of Nahavand was the decisive engagement of the Muslim conquest of Persia, resulting in a catastrophic defeat for Sasanian forces under King Yazdegerd III. Following the battle, Yazdegerd escaped to the Merv area but could not raise another substantial army, effectively ending organized Sasanian military resistance to the Rashidun Caliphate. The victory opened the surrounding cities, including Spahan (Isfahan), to Rashidun control and removed the last coherent force capable of contesting Islamic expansion into Persia. The battle's outcome marked the effective collapse of Sasanian imperial power and opened the path for the subsequent religious and political transformation of the region within the broader conquest of 633–654.
