Significance
The Battle of Muriq was part of Montenegro's broader effort to expand the Principality's territory during the Montenegrin–Ottoman War of 1861–62, with Montenegrin forces under general Mirko Petrović targeting the Muriqi region of Skadarska Krajina, inhabited by Albanian Malësors. The operation involved coordinated columns approaching from multiple directions and an effort to cut off Albanian reinforcements from Bar. The Albanian defenders prevailed, denying Montenegro the territorial gain the operation had been designed to secure and checking the principality's expansion in this sector of the conflict.
Tactics
The Montenegrin plan involved converging attacks on the Muriqi region from multiple directions. Captain Ilija Plamenac led 200 soldiers from Selca and Krricë to strike the northern part of Muriqi, while Savo Vujović commanded 400 men drawn from Dupillo, Bercela, and Salca to attack from the south. Simultaneously, the Montenegrin priest Milo Vojvodić was tasked with blocking all roads from Bar to prevent Albanian reinforcements from reaching the defenders. Despite this coordinated encircling approach, the Albanian Malësor forces repelled the attack.
