The Battle of Muizenberg was a British military expedition to seize the Dutch Cape Colony at the Cape of Good Hope within the broader context of the French Revolutionary Wars. The Cape Colony held a singular strategic value: as the only viable South African port on the route between Europe and the East Indies, control of it directly affected naval logistics and imperial reach across the eastern trade network. Though economically insignificant in itself, possession of the Cape could determine which European power maintained reliable passage for its fleets and merchant shipping to the colonial East. The British force of 1,800, facing Dutch East India Company defenders numbering 3,600 under Sluysken and Gordon, undertook the expedition under Elphinstone and Craig as part of the wider effort to contain French Revolutionary power and secure maritime assets of Britain's Dutch adversaries.
