The Battle of Mount Vesuvius was the opening engagement of the Third Servile War, marking the first occasion on which Rome deployed a dedicated military force to suppress the rebellion led by Spartacus. The dispatch of a militia force of 3,000 men under Gaius Claudius Glaber signaled that the Senate recognized the revolt as a threat requiring organized military response rather than local containment.
