Battle of Motovilivka

Overview

The Battle of Motovylivka was a military engagement fought between forces of the Ukrainian State and the Directorate of Ukraine. The battle took place on 18 November 1918 during the Ukrainian Civil War, and resulted in a major victory for the Directorate. The battle resulted in the eventual collapse of the Ukrainian State in December 1918.

Significance

The Battle of Motovilivka, fought on 18 November 1918, was a decisive engagement between forces of the Ukrainian State and the Directorate of Ukraine during the Ukrainian Civil War. The Directorate, fielding roughly 1,000 troops against the Ukrainian State's 1,500, secured a major victory that directly precipitated the collapse of the Ukrainian State the following month, in December 1918. The battle marked a turning point in the contest for control over the Ukrainian political order that had emerged following the end of the First World War, effectively ending the Hetmanate's authority and clearing the way for the Directorate to assume governing power.
