The Battle of Mortara, fought on 21 March 1849, was an Austrian tactical success against a Piedmont-Sardinian force that held a numerical advantage of 26,000 troops to 19,000. Piedmont-Sardinia suffered approximately 2,400 casualties. The engagement occurred during the First Italian War of Independence, a conflict in which Piedmont-Sardinia sought to challenge Austrian dominance in the Italian peninsula. An Austrian victory at Mortara under Radetzky against forces nominally directed by Chrzanowski and Charles Albert contributed to the broader collapse of the Piedmontese campaign, reinforcing Austrian operational control and undermining the viability of the independence effort at this stage of the war.
