The Battle of Montenotte was the opening French victory of Bonaparte's Italian campaign, demonstrating his ability to strike a divided Austro-Piedmontese force in detail. Facing an Austrian corps under Argenteau, the French inflicted roughly 3,500 casualties on a force of 6,000, a disproportionate loss that immediately degraded Austrian combat power in the Ligurian Apennines.
