Battle context

The Battle of Monte Cristi was a Spanish offensive operation during the Dominican Restoration War in which a force of 6,000 troops with 13 cannons, commanded by Captain-General José de la Gándara, sailed from Santiago de Cuba to Manzanillo Bay before moving against Dominican insurgent positions at Monte Cristi. The defeat of Benito Monción's forces and their subsequent retreat demonstrated Spain's capacity to project substantial military power along the Dominican coast and dislodge insurgent footholds in the northwest of the territory. The engagement took place within the broader Spanish effort to suppress the restoration movement that had begun in 1863, and the wounding of Fernando Primo de Rivera, a future Spanish general, illustrates the cost the campaign imposed even on its successful operations.
