The Battle of Molodi, fought near the village of Molodi approximately 50 kilometres south of Moscow in July–August 1572, was one of the defining engagements of Ivan the Terrible's reign and a decisive moment in the Crimean–Russian Wars. Devlet I Giray's horde had burned Moscow the previous year, and a second major offensive against the Russian capital was repelled when Russian and Cossack forces under Prince Mikhail Vorotynsky thoroughly defeated the Crimean army. The scale of the confrontation — a Crimean force recorded at 120,000 against a Russian and Cossack force of some 60,000–70,000 — made the outcome particularly consequential. The defeat checked Crimean offensive momentum at a moment when the Khanate had demonstrated the capacity to strike Moscow itself, and it foreclosed the prospect of a follow-up campaign that could have compounded the destruction of the previous year.
