Battle context

The Battle of Molins de Rey was fought 15 kilometres west of Barcelona in Catalonia, placing it within the broader French effort to consolidate control over northeastern Spain during the Peninsular War. The Spanish force suffered approximately 2,200 casualties against a French corps of 14,000, with the loss of all Spanish artillery and the capture of the Conde de Caldagues compounding the numerical toll. The Spanish army was further disadvantaged by the absence of its commander Juan Miguel de Vives y Feliu, leaving Theodor von Reding and Caldagues in temporary command. The outcome removed an organized Spanish defensive force from the Catalan theater and stripped it of its artillery, significantly degrading Spanish capacity to contest French operations in the region.
