Battle context
The second Battle of Mohács, fought on 12 August 1687 during the Great Turkish War, pitted a Holy Roman Empire force of 40,000 under Charles of Lorraine, Maximilian II Emanuel, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, Eugene of Savoy, and Nils Bielke against an Ottoman army of 60,000 commanded by Sarı Süleyman Paşa. The outcome inflicted approximately 10,000 Ottoman casualties against Imperial losses of around 2,000, a disparity that pointed to a decisive Imperial victory. The engagement carried symbolic as well as strategic weight: Mohács was the same ground where Ottoman forces had crushed the Kingdom of Hungary in 1526, and a victory there in 1687 marked a pronounced reversal of Ottoman fortunes in the broader Great Turkish War. The battle accelerated the Imperial reconquest of Hungary and contributed to the political crisis within the Ottoman state that followed successive military reverses during this period of the war.
