Battle context

The Battle of Mendigorría occurred at a pivotal moment in the First Carlist War, coming shortly after the death of Tomás de Zumalacárregui at the Siege of Bilbao. Zumalacárregui had been the Carlists' most capable field commander, and his loss at Bilbao left the movement in a weakened state of leadership. At Mendigorría, Vicente González Moreno assumed command in his place, facing a substantially larger Liberal force under Luis Fernández de Córdova and Diego de León y Navarrete. The Carlist force of 24,000 suffered around 1,500 casualties against the Liberals' 1,000, suggesting the engagement went against the Carlists. The presence of the Carlist pretender Don Carlos on the field underscored the stakes of the action for the legitimist cause. The battle reflected the broader difficulty the Carlists faced in sustaining offensive momentum following Zumalacárregui's death, a loss that the movement could not readily absorb during a critical phase of the war.
