Battle context

The Battle of Medina ended the Gutiérrez–Magee Expedition, the principal republican effort to wrest Texas from Spanish authority during this phase of the Mexican War of Independence. Arredondo's forces, outnumbering the republican army, inflicted casualties of approximately 1,300 on a combined force of Tejano-Mexican and Tejano-American revolutionaries — losses amounting to nearly the entire republican strength engaged. The destruction of the Republican Army of the North effectively suppressed the independence movement in Texas and restored Spanish control over the region. Described as the deadliest battle in Texas history, the defeat eliminated the organized revolutionary presence that had briefly threatened San Antonio de Bexar and set back the cause of Texas independence by years.
