The Battle of Matasiete, fought on 31 July 1817 near La Asunción on Isla Margarita, resulted in a defeat for the Spanish Royalist forces under Pablo Morillo at the hands of Republican revolutionaries commanded by Francisco Esteban Gómez. With roughly 1,300 Republican troops holding off a Royalist force of approximately 3,000, the engagement demonstrated that independence forces on Isla Margarita could repel a numerically superior expedition. The defense of Margarita held strategic value within the broader Venezuelan War of Independence, as the island had served as a recurring base and symbol of Republican resistance; denying Spanish forces control there preserved a foothold for the independence cause during a critical period of the war.
