The 1794 operation formed part of British efforts to seize French colonial possessions in the Caribbean during the Revolutionary Wars, exploiting French vulnerability at a moment when metropolitan France was convulsed by internal upheaval. A British force of approximately 6,000 troops under Charles Grey, supported by naval forces under John Jervis, achieved a successful invasion against French defenders commanded by Donatien de Rochambeau. The capture of Martinique extended British control over a strategically and commercially valuable island in the Lesser Antilles, consistent with London's broader Caribbean strategy of acquiring French colonial assets as leverage for eventual peace negotiations.
