The Battle of Marquain was an early engagement of the War of the First Coalition, fought on 29 April 1792 between a French force under Théobald Dillon and an Austrian force under Louis-François de Civalart. The French, outnumbered with approximately 2,300 troops against around 3,000 Austrians, suffered a defeat. Coming at the outset of France's revolutionary wars, the engagement was one of several early reverses that exposed the weaknesses of the French army in the opening phase of the conflict.
