Battle context
The Battle of Manzikert, fought near Manzikert in 1071, resulted in the decisive defeat of the Byzantine army and the capture of Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes by Seljuk forces under Alp Arslan. The loss of the emperor on the battlefield directly undermined Byzantine authority across Anatolia and Armenia, removing the political and military cohesion needed to defend those territories. The defeat opened Anatolia to gradual Turkification, as Turkic groups moving westward during the eleventh century treated the Seljuk victory as an opening into Asia Minor. Within the broader arc of the Byzantine–Seljuq Wars, Manzikert marked a structural shift: the Byzantine Empire lost its capacity to hold the Anatolian interior, and the demographic and political character of the region began a transformation that would prove permanent.
