Battle context

The Battle of Mang Yang Pass, fought from 24 to 29 June 1954, was among the costliest French Union defeats of the First Indochina War. French Union forces suffered 950 casualties against an estimated 100 for the Việt Minh, from a force of approximately 3,500 facing a Việt Minh strength of 4,000 to 5,000. Coming shortly after the fall of Dien Bien Phu, the battle compounded French Union losses in the final phase of the war. Together these defeats underscored the collapse of French military position in Indochina as armistice negotiations concluded the conflict in 1954.
