Battle context

The Battle of Mandora formed part of the broader British campaign to dislodge French forces from Egypt during the French Revolutionary Wars. Fought three days after the British landing, the engagement represented a French attempt under François Lanusse to check Abercromby's advance on Alexandria before the British could consolidate their position. The failure of that attempt allowed the British expeditionary force to continue pressing toward the port, sustaining 1,136 casualties in the process. Though described as a minor engagement, Mandora contributed to the sequential pressure that defined the campaign's opening phase, with control of Alexandria remaining the immediate operational objective.
