Battle context

Malvern Hill was the concluding engagement of the Seven Days Battles, the week-long Confederate offensive aimed at driving the Army of the Potomac away from Richmond. Fighting on a 130-foot elevation just one mile from the James River, Union forces under McClellan and Porter repulsed Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at significant Confederate cost—5,650 casualties against 3,007 for the Union. Despite the tactical success on the hill, McClellan continued his withdrawal to the James River rather than pressing the advantage, effectively ending the Peninsula Campaign's bid on Richmond. The battle demonstrated how prepared defensive ground, combined with massed artillery and naval gunfire support from three warships, could impose disproportionate losses on an attacking force, but the strategic outcome still favored the Confederacy: Richmond remained in Confederate hands and the Union's primary offensive effort in the Eastern Theater in 1862 was exhausted.
