Battle context
The Battle of Madagascar opened with Operation Ironclad on 5 May 1942, targeting the port of Diego-Suarez at the northern tip of the island. The British operation was directed against Vichy French-controlled Madagascar with the strategic aim of denying the island's ports to the Imperial Japanese Navy. Control of those ports was judged essential to protecting Allied shipping lanes connecting Britain to India, Australia, and Southeast Asia — arteries that sustained the entire Allied position in the Indian Ocean theater. With Japanese naval power extending rapidly across the Pacific and Indian Oceans in early 1942, the prospect of Madagascar serving as a base for Japanese interdiction of those routes represented a significant threat. The British committed between 10,000 and 15,000 troops against a Vichy French garrison of approximately 8,000, inflicting around 1,000 casualties on the defenders.
