Battle context
The Battle of Maaten al-Sarra was the first engagement of the entire Chadian–Libyan conflict to take place on Libyan territory. Chadian forces under Hassan Djamous launched a surprise raid on the Maaten al-Sarra Air Base to neutralize Libyan airpower that had already blocked Chad's August offensive into the Aouzou Strip. The attack succeeded: Libyan casualties numbered between 1,000 and 1,713 against a force of roughly 2,500, while Chad's 2,000-strong raiding force sustained comparatively few losses. The strategic effect was immediate. By carrying the war onto Libyan soil and inflicting severe losses on Libyan air assets and personnel, the raid shifted the balance of pressure sharply against Libya and contributed directly to the definitive ceasefire signed just six days later, on September 11, 1987, ending the active phase of the Toyota War.
