Battle of Lost River

Overview

The Battle of Lost River in November 1872 was the first battle in the Modoc War in the northwestern United States. The skirmish, which was fought near the Lost River along the California–Oregon border, was the result of an attempt by the U.S. 1st Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army to force a band of the Modoc tribe to relocate back to the Klamath Reservation, which they had left in objection of its conditions.

Significance

The Battle of Lost River opened the Modoc War, marking the point at which U.S. Army attempts to compel Modoc relocation turned from administrative pressure to armed confrontation. The skirmish arose when the 1st Cavalry Regiment moved to force a Modoc band back to the Klamath Reservation, which the Modocs had left in protest of its conditions. That coercive action triggered resistance under Captain Jack, Scarface Charley, and Hooker Jim, setting the conflict in motion along the California–Oregon border. As the war's opening engagement, Lost River established the central dynamic of the broader Modoc War: federal authority asserting reservation policy against Modoc refusal to accept terms they considered unjust.
