Significance

The Battle of Longewala was one of the first major engagements in the western sector of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. A Pakistani force of 2,000–3,000 troops supported by 40 tanks assaulted the Indian border post at Longewala in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, where they were met by approximately 120 Indian defenders backed by Hawker Hunter and HAL Marut fighter-bombers. The outcome—Pakistani casualties of 200–500 against a dramatically smaller defending force—established the battle as a significant defensive victory for India and checked Pakistani momentum in the western sector early in the conflict. It is regarded as one of the most notable engagements in Indian Army history, demonstrating the combined effectiveness of a small ground force and close air support against a numerically superior armored assault.

Tactics

The Indian defense relied on a small of roughly 120 soldiers holding the Longewala post against a Pakistani column of 2,000–3,000 troops and 40 tanks. Air support from Hawker Hunter and HAL Marut fighter-bombers played a central role alongside the ground defenders in repelling the assault.
