The Battle of Long Tan was fought between Viet Cong and People's Army of Vietnam units and elements of the 1st Australian Task Force in Phước Tuy Province, South Vietnam. The engagement resulted in approximately 245 enemy casualties. As one of the principal actions involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War, Long Tan demonstrated the combat effectiveness of the 1st Australian Task Force operating in its assigned area of responsibility and became a defining event in Australia's military participation in the conflict.
