Battle context

The Battle of Lomas de Santa María was fought in December 1813 near Valladolid as part of the broader insurgent campaign during the Mexican War of Independence. The engagement brought together several of the rebellion's most prominent commanders — Morelos, Matamoros, Bravo, and Galeana — against royalist forces under Iturbide, Calleja, and del Llano. Despite holding a considerable numerical advantage with roughly 5,600 fighters against approximately 1,200 royalists, the rebel forces suffered disproportionately higher casualties: 789 against an estimated 200 on the royalist side. The outcome, while not formally recorded, reflects the pattern of royalist tactical effectiveness in the later stages of the independence conflict, where disciplined professional forces repeatedly checked insurgent momentum despite being outnumbered.
