Battle of Lodja

Significance

The Battle of Lođa was fought in two phases at the village of Logjë during the summer of 1998, representing an early contested engagement of the Kosovo War between Yugoslav forces and the combined KLA and FARK. The first phase, triggered by the killing of two Yugoslav policemen patrolling the area, ended in a KLA victory; the second phase, fought roughly five weeks later, ended in a Yugoslav victory. The back-and-forth outcome reflected the fluid and localized nature of the conflict in this period, before NATO intervention altered the strategic balance. Following Yugoslav forces' ultimate success in the second phase, the village's 284 houses and mosque were destroyed by Serbian Police using bulldozers, an act consistent with the broader pattern of village destruction documented across Kosovo during the war.
