Battle of Lobositz

Overview

The Battle of Lobositz or Lovosice also Lowositz on 1 October 1756 was the opening land battle of the Third Silesian War and the wider Seven Years' War. Frederick the Great's 28,000 Prussians were prevented by 33,000 Austrians under Maximilian Ulysses Count von Browne from continuing their invasion into the rich Bohemian plain, forcing Frederick to ultimately fall back north into Saxony for the winter.

Significance

The Battle of Lobositz on 1 October 1756 was the opening land engagement of both the Third Silesian War and the wider Seven Years' War, giving it a particular place as the conflict's first test of arms on land. Frederick the Great led approximately 28,300 Prussians against an Austrian force of roughly 33,354 under Field Marshal Maximilian Ulysses Browne. Despite roughly comparable casualties on both sides — Prussia suffering between 2,906 and 3,300 killed and wounded, Austria between 2,984 and 3,291 — the engagement produced a significant operational consequence: the Austrians prevented Frederick from pushing his invasion further into the Bohemian plain. Blocked from exploiting Bohemia's resources and strategic depth, Frederick was compelled to withdraw northward into Saxony for the winter. This outcome checked Prussia's opening offensive momentum at the very outset of a war Frederick had initiated, and it established early that Austrian resistance would contest rather than yield ground, shaping the character of the campaigns that followed.
