Battle context
The Battle of Laufach, also known as the Battle of Frohnhofen, was fought on 13 July 1866 as part of the Main Campaign during the Austro-Prussian War. The Prussian 26th Infantry Brigade repulsed attacks by the 3rd (Hessian) Division of the VIII Corps over the course of several hours, inflicting heavy losses on the Hessians. By securing the Spessart crossings, the engagement created favorable conditions for the Battle of Aschaffenburg the following day, where Prussian forces would contest the Main river crossing. The outcome thus served as a preparatory action that extended Prussian operational momentum in the western theater of the war.
