Battle context

The Battle of Las Tres Acequias, fought near San Bernardo on 26 August 1814, was an internecine engagement between the Carrerista and O'Higginista factions of the Chilean independence movement. O'Higgins suffered defeat at the hands of Luis Carrera's forces, and the clash deepened the division within the patriot cause at a critical moment. The consequences extended beyond the immediate confrontation: the weakened and fractured nationalist coalition was unable to mount a coherent defense against the royalist advance, contributing directly to the decisive patriot defeat at the Battle of Rancagua roughly a month later. Las Tres Acequias thus stands as a key episode in the collapse of the Patria Vieja, demonstrating how factional conflict within the independence movement undermined military cohesion when coordinated resistance to royalist forces was most needed.
