The Battle of Las Carreras, fought on April 21–22, 1849 near Baní in Peravia Province, marked a critical defensive success for the Dominican Republic during the years following its declaration of independence. A Dominican force of approximately 800 troops from the Army of the South, under General Pedro Santana, defeated a Haitian army numbering around 10,000 soldiers commanded by Faustin Soulouque. The outcome demonstrated that Dominican forces could repel substantially larger Haitian incursions, reinforcing the viability of the young republic's military resistance and checking Haitian efforts to reassert control over the eastern portion of Hispaniola during this ongoing contest over the island.
