Overview

The Battle of Kvistrum was fought on 29 September 1788 during the Theatre War, a phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790, between Sweden and the Denmark–Norway. The Swedes lost the battle and had five killed and the rest captured with 60 wounded, the Danes and Norwegians had suffered 5 killed and 16 wounded.

Significance

The Battle of Kvistrum, fought on 29 September 1788, was an engagement of the Theatre War, the Scandinavian front of the broader Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. A Danish–Norwegian force under Johann Friedrich von und zu Mansbach, numbering between 7,500 and 8,000 troops, defeated the Swedish force commanded by Jan Verner Tranefelt. Swedish losses were severe relative to the engagement's scale: five killed, the remainder of the engaged force captured, and sixty wounded, against Danish–Norwegian casualties of five killed and sixteen wounded. The lopsided outcome reflected the disparity in force size and left Sweden without the captured contingent for the remainder of the short-lived Theatre War, which concluded in 1789 before producing a decisive territorial settlement.
