The Battle of Kroya marked a significant reverse for Dutch colonial forces during the Java War. A Dutch column in pursuit of what appeared to be a small rebel contingent near the village of Kroya in Purworejo encountered a force far larger than anticipated and was subsequently destroyed in an ambush. The engagement demonstrated the vulnerability of Dutch pursuit operations to deliberate rebel deception, where a small group drew a column into contact with a concentrated force.
